The best on-call software for MSPs in 2026, scored on the four things that matter: PSA ticket sync, per-client reporting, multi-tenant routing and handover.

It is 2:14am and a client's backup server has stopped responding. Your RMM fires an alert. Now answer three questions: which of your forty clients is this, who is on call tonight, and where does the ticket live once someone picks it up? Most on-call software answers the second question beautifully and ignores the other two, because most on-call software was built for a single company running its own infrastructure, not for a managed service provider running dozens of tenants through a PSA.

That mismatch is the whole story of choosing on-call software as an MSP. The market is full of genuinely excellent tools. The catch is that the best-known ones are built for SRE and DevOps teams, and a handful of features that are optional for them are non-negotiable for you: PSA ticket sync, per-client reporting, multi-tenant alert routing, and a real shift handover. This guide scores tools on exactly those four things.

The stakes aren't abstract. In Uptime Institute's 2024 outage analysis, more than half of significant outages now cost over US$100,000. For an MSP, every minute spent working out which client and who's on callis billed at that rate. Worse, it lands on your SLA, not someone else's.

Why MSP on-call is a different problem

An internal SRE team pages one organisation's engineers about one organisation's services. An MSP pages a shared roster about incidents spread across many separate clients, each with its own SLA, its own billing, and its own memory of "how responsive are these people, really?" Four structural differences fall out of that.

Your system of record is a PSA.Billing, SLAs, and client communication run through ConnectWise Manage, Autotask PSA, or HaloPSA. Reporting has to be per client.A quarterly business review needs this client's alert noise, this client's reliability trend, this client's after-hours burden, not an org-wide average. Single-tenant tools report per service or per team because that is all their data model knows about.

Alerts have to route across tenants. One rotation covers many clients, so the tool has to map an inbound alert to the right client and the current on-call engineer at once. This is the core of RMM alert management for MSPs.

Handover is client experience.When a shift ends and context doesn't travel with it, the client re-explains the problem to the next technician. That is lost revenue and eroded trust, the hidden cost of MSP shift changes.

Every tool below is judged on these, and only these. It is a deliberately MSP-shaped rubric. A brilliant SRE tool can score low here and still be the right choice for a software team.

The tools, scored for MSPs

Ordered by fit against the four criteria above, not by overall quality, and not by how good the tool is for software teams. Two tools here (ilert, OnPage) are genuinely MSP-aware and deserve a serious look. One (PagerDuty) is the most capable pager on the market and still worth it for many shops. The rest are excellent tools built for a different buyer.

Best for: MSPs that want PSA sync, per-client reporting, alert routing and handover in one tool

Shiftctl is the only tool on this list that scores natively on all four criteria, because it models the shift as a first-class object rather than bolting scheduling onto an alerting engine. On the Enterprise plan, alerts from your RMM or monitoring route to the engineer on call and escalate over SMS, voice call (press 1 to acknowledge), Slack, Teams, email and push until someone acknowledges. That is data most MSPs simply cannot produce today. Enforced shift sign-offs mean a technician cannot close out without documenting tickets, pending items, warnings, and a difficulty rating, and the incoming engineer must acknowledge the brief before starting.

Cons, stated plainly:

  • No inbound number a client can dial (Shiftctl pages out, it doesn't take inbound calls)
  • Alert routing and escalation require the Enterprise plan
  • Newer product with a smaller integration ecosystem than PagerDuty

Best for MSPs that: run ConnectWise, Autotask, or HaloPSA and want alerts, escalation, PSA tickets, and handovers in one place, and whose paging can run on SMS, voice and chat rather than an inbound client hotline.

Best for: MSPs that want native PSA alerting across all three major PSAs

ilert is the most MSP-aware of the dedicated alerting tools, and it earns that. It ships native integrations with Autotask, HaloPSA, and ConnectWise PSA (the full trio), pairing them with on-call scheduling and automated voice alerts. If your priority is getting PSA-triggered alerts to the right engineer fast, ilert does that as well as anyone.

Why it's strong: broad native PSA coverage, a genuine free tier for up to 5 users, and a mature escalation and notification engine. For a small MSP that wants reliable paging out of its PSA without a lot of setup, it is an easy tool to recommend.

Where an MSP outgrows it:ilert's PSA integrations are oriented around alerting and on-call, not around being the ticket's system of record or producing per-client QBR analytics, and it has no structured shift handover. If your gap is "alerts don't reach the on-call engineer", ilert closes it well. If your gap is "context and tickets fall through the cracks at shift change", that is a different problem it doesn't set out to solve.

OnPage

Best for: HaloPSA shops that want persistent, DND-bypassing paging

OnPageis a paging-first platform with a well-regarded HaloPSA integration. High-priority Halo tickets become OnPage alerts that, in the vendor's own words, "bypass phone's DND settings and alert persistently until read." It carries its own on-call scheduler with rotations and escalation, and delivers over SMS, email, phone call and push.

Why it's strong: the HaloPSA integration is bidirectional: OnPage alerts update the Halo ticket in real time and ticket changes in Halo update the alert, with a full audit trail across both systems. Persistent, DND-bypassing alerting is genuinely hard to beat when the cost of a missed page is high, which is why OnPage does so well in healthcare as well as MSP.

Where an MSP outgrows it: its deepest PSA integration is Halo-specific, so ConnectWise or Autotask shops get less out of it. It is built for reliable notification and escalation rather than per-client analytics or structured shift handover, so those remain gaps.

Best for MSPs that:run HaloPSA and rank "the page always gets through" above reporting and handover.

PagerDuty

Best for: Deep escalation logic and the broadest integration catalogue

PagerDuty defined on-call management and still has the most mature escalation engine and the widest integration catalogue (750+) of anything here. If raw routing sophistication is your first concern, nothing on this list beats it, and plenty of MSPs run it happily.

Why it's strong: best-in-class escalation policies, event orchestration, and a huge ecosystem. For a larger MSP with complex, conditional routing, that depth is a real advantage.

Where an MSP feels the fit gap:PagerDuty's first-party ITSM integrations centre on tools like ServiceNow, so connecting it to ConnectWise Manage or Autotask PSA generally means a third-party middleware connector rather than native, bidirectional PSA sync. Its data model is single-tenant, so reporting is per-service rather than per-client, and there is no structured shift handover. Cost also climbs: Professional is $25/user/mo ($21 annual) and Business (where advanced features live) is $49/user/mo ($41 annual), verified July 2026. That is real money for an MSP that then still needs a PSA connector and a handover process on top.

Best for MSPs that: need the deepest escalation logic and the broadest integrations, and are comfortable adding a PSA connector and a separate handover layer.

Excellent tools built for a different buyer

A few tools come up constantly in on-call discussions and are, on their own terms, superb. They score low here only because they were designed for single-tenant SRE and DevOps teams, not MSPs, so PSA sync and per-client reporting were never in scope.   • Better Stack bundles uptime monitoring, on-call, and status pages elegantly, with unlimited phone/SMS alerts. Fantastic for a product team that wants monitoring and paging in one, though it has no MSP PSA sync or per-client tenancy.
  • incident.io is arguably the best Slack-native incident response tool going, with strong post-incident workflows. If your team lives in Slack it is a joy to use; it just isn't built around the PSA-and-many-clients model.
  • SolarWinds IT Incident Response (formerly Squadcast) offers a PagerDuty-like feature set at lower cost. Note that Squadcast was acquired by SolarWinds in March 2025 and is now sold within the SolarWinds platform. Its ITSM sync targets tools like ServiceNow, not MSP PSAs.

  • You run ConnectWise, Autotask, or HaloPSA and want one tool for alerts, tickets, reporting and handover: Shiftctl.
  • You want native PSA alerting fast and don't need handover or per-client reporting yet: ilert.
  • You're a HaloPSA shop and the top priority is that the page always breaks through: OnPage.
  • You need the deepest escalation logic and widest integrations, PSA connector and all: PagerDuty.

A note on inbound calls: two valid setups

The one thing Shiftctl doesn't do is take an inbound call from a client who dials a support number. If that is a hard requirement for you, that doesn't rule Shiftctl out. It just means one of two setups:
